Substitute-ready music lessons for K–3 classrooms
Interactive Rhythm Learning Experience
A substitute-ready lesson for students in Grades 1–3 that preserves musical participation even when a music teacher is absent
Lil’ Liza Jane is an interactive learning experience in which rhythm modeling and participation cues are built into a scaffolded sequence, allowing young learners to engage musically without specialist guidance.
Design choices focused on learner experience:
- Embedded modeling and pacing to support guided participation
- Used a peer-aged character to support learner connection
- Structured listening, notation and narration for comprehension
Next iteration: clarify the purpose for learners by showing why reading music matters through an anticipatory set
Video-Based Music Learning Experience
A story-based learning experience for students in Grades K–2 that orients attention through the interplay of music, image and narrative
Froggy Went a Courtin’ functions as an instructional video anchor that teachers can extend into a full lesson through guided participation and follow-up activities that support singing, movement and discussion.
Design choices focused on learner experience:
- Created a miniature animal world to support story-based learning
- Used video to align image and sound as the story unfolds
- Designed classroom activities to extend guided participation
Next iteration: improve visual consistency across generated images so setting and characters remain stable from scene to scene
